I'm here in San Carlos City to visit their library hoping to find some Pangasinan literary works of interest. I got a copy of Aligando from Dr. Linda Andaya but it is incomplete and written in modern orthography. Perhaps the library here in San Carlos has a copy of the original.

I just bought a Bible in Pangasinan language as a gift for myself. I'm still scouting for the old versions though, particularly those printed in the 1920s. I was told the old ones were written in classic Pangasinan and that's what I'm after and interested with.

Foundation for Endangered Languages call for proposals for 2005

The Foundation for Endangered Languages is now accepting proposals for projects of work that will support, enable or assist the documentation, protection or promotion of one or more endangered languages. These endangered languages may be anywhere in the world.

The Foundation's funds remain extremely limited and only an exceptional award will be greater than US $1,500. Smaller proposals stand a better chance of funding.

Format for Submissions:

As of this year, there has been a change in the format for submissions to the Foundation. In future, applicants must submit a short “Case for Support” and a Application Form. Guidance on how to write a Case, and fill out the form, is accessible at the Foundation's website: - http://www.ogmios.org/grant.htm

Mangaldan's Don Juan T. Biason

THE golden age of Pangasinan journalism and literature was in the 1920's and 1930's when Pangasinan, as a local language, was highly developed. Novels, short stories and quality poetry were churned out by Pangasinan's literati headed by Don Pablo Mejia, Maria C. Magsano and a host of other literary luminaries were published and devoured hungrily by the literary-conscious Pangasinenses.

*Maria Prado Magsano was born on February 3, 1883. She studied at the University of the Philippines and was the first female teacher from Pangasinan who passed the civil service. She taught at the Philippine Normal College (now University) for 20 years.

In the 1930s, she was active in the promotion of women's rights and became the president of The Women Suffragists.

During this period, she also edited Silew, the monthly magazine of the Pangasinan Review Press (which became the Pangasinan Courier in 1948) and published literary works. Her writings are said to have set the direction for old and new writers in Pangasinan.

Two of her novels, Kuritan ko nen Bakal (Written during the War) and Samban Ag Nabenegan (Unretracted Vow), were translated into English. Some of her short stories and plays were not published.

She received the President's Award during the Women's Rights Day in 1966.

She died on May 25, 1968 at the age of 84.

Another poem about Urduja inspired by a recent email I received from a doctoral student of Filipino literature in the U.S. Her dissertation will include a chapter discussing Pangasinan's beleaguered Princess Urduja.

How and when did I first learn of Urduja? Is Urduja really a part of Pangasinan’s oral history?

A fourth of these languages—thirty-two—are spoken by different Negrito ethnolinguistic populations scattered throughout the archipelago (Grimes 2000). F. SIONIL JOSE Speaks at U.P.

On November 23, National Artist for Literature and Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, F. Sionil Jose will deliver a public lecture at the University of the Philippines on "The University and the Revolution" at the Faculty Conference (FC) Hall, U.P. Diliman at 1:30P.M.

The world renowned novelist was personally invited to speak at UP by outgoing U.P. President Nemenzo, a long-time friend and reader of JOSE. The lecture will be the latest in a series of recent visits to U.P. by cultural icons including ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, fimmaker Marilou Diaz-Abaya and National Artist for Dance Leonor Orosa Goquingco.

Pangasinan Literature – the consciousness of our race that remained stagnant for centuries because the Pangasinenses have not kept pace with its own evolution as far as language and literature is concerned.

Say salita ya amta na balon Pangasinansi et ama’y ataoir ed atateng da odino ama’y naaralan ed abung.

A singa saray arum met a salita, oala’y dua’ran klasi na salitan Pangasinan – manguna ima’y ordinario, uusaren ed abung tan kasual ya osa-osa; tan kumadua, ama’y atagey a klasin Pangasinan ya uusaren da’ra’y umaanlong tan tumatagaumen nen saman. Say atagey a klasin Pangasinan so abayag lan abalang o naandi ta nabilang labat ira’y sumusulat tayo nen saman angga ni’d natan. Of Pangasinan Grammar Books and Dictionaries

I learned about the grammar and dictionaries of the Pangasinan language when I first read the Pangasinan Grammar (1970) by Rev. Fidel Amurrio.

A couple of years ago or so, I received a copy of the Diccionario Pangasinan-Español (1865) by Fr. Lorenzo Fernandez-Cosgaya courtesy of Dr. Carl Rubino thru Dr. R. David Zorc.

I was also able to secure a copy of Gramatica tan Diccionario na Salitay Pangasinan (1923) by Ernest Rayner. Then there is the latest Pangasinan-English Dictionary compiled by Mel V. Jovellanos.

I am sure there are few more Pangasinan grammar books and dictionaries available but quite rare, out-of-print and/or part of a private collection. I would love to have some copies for my Pangasinaniana collection.

Pangasinan Day awardees named

Illustrious Pangasinenses who left behind good name and worthy deeds will be given homage and recognition during the observance of Pangasinan Day on November 13 in San Carlos City.

The partial list of outstanding Pangasinenses to be honored are the late Pangasinan governors Daniel Maramba (Sta. Barbara), Francisco Duque (Aguilar), Aguedo Agbayani (Lingayen), Senator Cipriano Primicias (Alcala), Congressman Angel Fernandez (Dagupan City), Doña Eva Macaraeg-Macapagal (who accordingly was born in Barangay Guelew, San Carlos City), Dr. Martin Posadas (San Carlos City), Mayor Benigno Gubatan (Mangaldan), Mayor Artemio Frias (founder of Basista); Rep. For some reasons, literary figures in Pangasinan are actually nothing. They (the so-called selection committee) give more priorities to politicians. However, I'm still glad they nominated Joyce Bernal (Performing Arts), Raul Tamayo (Pangasinan Music) and Jun Velasco (Journalism) for Outstanding Pangasinenses.

Our prominent literati who shaped Pangasinan language and literature were deliberately ignored: Pablo Mejia, Juan Villamil, Maria Magsano, Pedro Sison. etc...

This Nov. 13 is going to be a very sad day for the Pangasinan writers. And yes, there are only four of them left - Sergio Bumadilla, Leonarda Baltazar (Amor Cico), Dr. Linda Andaya and Santiago Villafania.

NBDB to hold Booklatan sa Pangasinan

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) will hold its Booklatan sa Bayan project in Pangasinan on November 8-13, 2004.

With the vital assistance of the Association of Authors and Writers for Regional Development and the Nationwide Book Network Inc. (NBNI), the activity will be held at the DepEd Division Training Center, West Central School in Dagupan city, and will included a battery of edifying seminar-workshop on non-fiction writing, library and barabgay reading center establishment, and book readership.

A book fair by Libro has also been scheduled during the five-day activity, where some of the newest book titles in the market today, ranging from different topics and fields of interest, will be displayed and put up for sale.

The opening ceremonies will be graced by NBDB chair Dr. Dennis Gonzales, together with the local government officials of Dagupan City and the province.

I had a chance to meet with Dir. Jaime Lucas (DTI Pangasinan) last Oct. 30 in Dagupan City. I presented him a copy of my 2nd book Malagilion: Soniton Pangasinan. He is encouraging me to come out with a directory of Pangasinan writers / authors and perhaps a canon of Pangasinan Literature.

On the other hand, Dr. Linda Andaya informed me that the Ulupan na Pansiansia'y Salitan Pangasinan is temporarily moved to no.27 Libsong East, Lingayen, Pangasinan until we will find a permanent office.

Dr. Andaya is also coming out with her first collection of Pangasinan short stories, Gamal.

In Alfred A. Yuson's latest article (PhilSTAR 10/25/2004), he wrote that Oct. 15 used to be World Poetry Day and that it was changed by some unknown entity to March.

Well, that unknown entity happens to be the UN Society of Writers and that the World Poetry Day takes place during the week of 21 March as proclaimed by the 30th session of UNESCO General Conference in 1999.

If Yuson is such a known entity, why don't he just write a letter to the UN Society of Writers or UNESCO to change back the World Poetry Day from March 21 to October 15?

Perhaps the unknown entity might consider known entity's request so that the rest of Philippine's known entities can celebrate World Poetry Day on Oct. 15

DAGUPAN -- The Pangasinan Provincial Government will validate a report that the candidates of Miss Earth who were in Pangasinan last week were dismayed that the tourist spots in the province, like the Hundred Islands National Park, are dirty.

Yeah, right. As if the provincial government do not know anything about it. It hasn't been a favorite tourist destination for some years now. There were reports then about lack of comfort rooms. Duh!

he lived a life of a warrior-poet
the paper bled and burned with his uni-
       versal man songs

he dreamt of halcyon days
while fighting underground
       with his red-profiled comrades

the dryads and muses cried
when he died a thousand deaths
       when that bullet pierced his mouth

and the last drop of his blood
stained the ground with his last poem:
       "Go ahead, finish me off."

Philippine Studies Literary Issue

Philippine Studies, an Ateneo de Manila University journal, will come out with a literary issue as part of its 53rd volume in 2005. This is a tradition begun when Gilda Cordero Fernando edited the first literary issue in 1965. Subsequent issues were edited by noted fictionist Alfrredo Navarro Salanga (l985) and poet-critic Emmanuel Torres (1995). This literary issue's editor is Soledad S. Reyes.

Submit your contributions in the following genres: poetry, short story, creative non-fiction, and one-act play. Works must be unpublished; written in English, Filipino, or in the other Philippine languages; and must not exceed 15 pages. Those written in languages other than English and Filipino must be accompanied by their English or Filipino translations.

The 2005 literary issue hopes to feature the creative works of our country's writers that illustrate both the thematic and technical concerns that have preoccupied them since the 1990s. As importantly, it seeks to help establish the parameters against which future literary and cultural historians could view this past decade, certainly one of the most troubled moments in our history.

All entries/contributions will be refereed, as has been the journal's practice.

Who's afraid of the Pangasinan poets?

I received a text message from Dr. Ma. Crisanta Nelmida-Flores of UP (Filipino Dept.) last night asking if I am interested to join a poetry reading at the Conspiracy. Dr. Flores is the editor of my poetry collection Balikas na Caboloan submitted to the NCCA a couple of years ago for the Ubod series.

As I understand it, it's going to be a poetry reading for Pangasinenses. I don't know any Pangasinan writers based here in Metro Manila except Al Mendoza.

We've not finalized as to when is the reading but I hope as soon as possible.

Pangasinan poets at Conspiracy? Hmmm... I can imagine some poets already conspiring to leave the venue before we could read a line or two.

Om Mani Padme Hum

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani Padme Hum, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the embodiment of compassion. Viewing the written form of the mantra is said to have the same effect -- it is often carved into stones and/or written on prayer wheel.

Sanskrit form: Om Mani Padma Hum (mantra of Avalokiteshvara)
Tibetan form: Om Mani Peme Hung (mantra of Chenrezig)

The meaning of this mantra in Tibetan Buddhism.

Yes, this endangered Pangasinan-speaking specie has been called a regionalist since he started posting and advocating the resurgence of the Pangasinan language on this infamous diurnal. How much more when his kind will multiply?:)

Retired UP professor leads 'Premio' honores

Writer, educator and researcher Prof. Ma. Lilia F. Realubit, PhD of the UP College of Education was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award during the awards night of the 1st Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Literaturang Bikolnon, a regionwide literary tilt launched by the Arejola Foundation for Social Responsibility to forge an advocacy for Bicol literary arts, held at the St. Vincent de Paul Auditorium of the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary, Naga City last Sept. 25, this year. The retired professor was cited for founding the Kabulig Bikol, a writers' organization, and the Bikol Heritage Society, Inc. Her pioneering efforts as scholar and critic have resulted in the Ibalon: Ethnohistory of the Bikol Region (1983), Bikols of the Philippines (1984), Bikol Literary History (2004), Bikol Dramatic Tradition (1989) and other scholarly works that inspired a whole generation of Bicolano writers and intellectuals.

Also honored in the awards night were Rizaldy M. Manrique for his Bikol fiction, Pacto de Sangre, which won the Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Osipon gold medallion and Kristian S. Cordero for his collection of Bikol poems, HALI(Y)A: Pagsantigwar kan mga Yawa kan Banwaan, the gold medallion winner of the Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Rawitdawit. Manrique and Cordero were each awarded the cash prize of P10,000.00.

Rawitdawit finalists Jaime Jesus Borlagdan, Araceli Calomos-Delgado, Jose Jason Chancoco, Estelito B. Jacob were awarded a framed Diploma of Merit. A second Diploma was awarded to double finalists Araceli Calomos-Delgado, Kristian S. Cordero and Estelito B. Jacob who were also cited in the Osipon category. The cited entries were chosen from submissions from all over the Philippines by judges (for rawitdawit) Fr. Wilmer Tria, noted Bikolista Carlos Briones, Pedro Sabido Grantee for Bikol Writing Frank Penones; (for Osipon) Prof. Danny Gerona,PhD., publisher Joe Obias and Mr. Rudy Alano of the NCCA Committee on Literary Arts. Alano and Penones also sit as members of the Executive Committee of the Premio Tomas.

Winners of the Premio para sa Parabasa, a readership prize launched to widen the audience for literature written in the Bikol language, were each awarded Diploma of Merit and a fellowship grant to the 2nd Juliana Arejola-Fajardo Workshop sa Pagsurat Bikol, also under the auspices of the Foundation, on Dec. 28 to 30, this year in Pili, Camarines Sur. Parabasa winners Karla Daphne Neonal, Owen del Castillo and Otello Santiano were chosen for their 150-word literary criticism reviewing a finalist's work as it appeared in The Bicol Mail and The Bikol Reporter, two weeklies based in Naga City. The ten entries cited in the Premio Tomas appeared in the said weeklies for five consecutive weeks as a move to make contemporary Bikol writing more accessible to the reading public.

Chaired by prize-winning poet Carlo Arejola and co-chaired by cultural worker Fabiana Arejola, the prize is named in honor of a patriot, writer and leading member of the Propaganda Movement and is envisioned to become Bicol's premier literary prize. Apart from the Premio Tomas and the Juliana writers' workshop, the Arejola Foundation also spearheads the Cry of Resistance outreach program in Taban, Minalabac, Camarines Sur. Now on its fourth year, the Taban outreach program is held around the second week of March to commemorate the ascension of Gen. Ludovico Arejola as over-all commander of Ambos Camarines during the Filipino-American War in 1900.

I attended the Neruda en el Corazon (Neruda sa Puso) poetry reading last night at DLSU, with my friend Eduardo Cong. The said event is in commemoration of the birth centennial of Pablo Neruda and a part of the Spanish Festival for the Culture and the Arts sponsored by Instituto Cervantes.

Spanish and Filipino poets (Ana Rossetti, Alfred Yuson, Jose F. Lacaba, Marra Pl. Lanot, Joi Barrios, Marjorie Evasco and Benilda Santos) read some poems of Neruda in Spanish and in English and Tagalog translations.

Ambassador Jorge Monteno of Chile awarded the Medalla Presidencia Centenario Pablo Neruda to National Artist F. Sionil Jose.

I only met Pete Lacaba after the reading :)

Yet another poem-in-progress :) The Kinalakian(s) were pre-Pangasinic amazons also known as the red-breasted warriors of princess Urduja. They practiced the so-called singgulo, an ancient martial arts using bolos (blades) and sticks made of wood or bamboo.

The Arejola Foundation for Social Responsibiltity announces the 10 best entries submitted to the 2004 Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Literaturang Bikolnon, envisioned to become Bicol’s premier literary prize.

Re: Ubod Series

According to the coordinator for publications of the NCCA, there's another delay in the publication of Ubod due to administrative problem. The graphic artist who is supposed to work on the page composition resigned. Duh!

I guess it's going to come out in 2005... perhaps!

Contributions call to the Literary Issue of Philippine Studies

This is for the literary issue of the 53rd volume of Philippine Studies in 2005. The Philippine Studies literary issue is a tradition begun when Gilda Cordero Fernando edited the first one in 1965. Two other issues followed: 1985, edited by noted fictionist Alfredo Navarro Salanga; 1995 edited by poet-critic Emmanuel Torres.

Call for contributions in the following genres: poetry, short story, creative non-fiction, and one-act play. Works must be:

1. unpublished

2. written in English, Filipino, or in the other Philippine languages (with accompanying English or Filipino translations for those written in languages other than English and Filipino)

3. must not exceed 15 pages

All entries/contributions will be refereed.

Dr. Soledad S. Reyes, the Editor for the Literary Issue, describes what it hopes to achieve:

"The 2005 literary issue hopes to feature the creative works of our country's writers that illustrate both the thematic and technical concerns that have preoccupied them since the 1990s. As importantly, it seeks to help establish the parameters against which future literary and cultural historians could view this past decade, certainly one of the most troubled moments in our history."

I had a very unpoetic day at the International School Manila (ISM) today. Yeah, like do I need to elaborate what on earth I was doing there? Well, it's job-related.

Methinks I need another job to have a life.

On the other hand, our school is sending me to a seminar tomorrow. I don't even have an idea what's the seminar all about. I've strong feeling though that it's not even related to my present work. I've no choice but to go anyway.

I submitted some of my hay(na)ku attempts for the Hay(na)ku anthology.

The "hay(na)ku" is a Filipino and diasporic poetic form conceptualized by Eileen Tabios, as inspired by the character "Cameron" in Richard Brautigan's novel The Hawkline Monster and Jack Kerouac's thoughts on the "American haiku."
