Erolalia

i.

tonight
i am Abelard
my Heloise

i will sing
of your lyric lips
the contours of your breast
your thighs
your sweet surprise!

ii.

when into your
nakedness feast
 O my heart will
break all pledges!
 i too will pound
God’s skull & breast
 i’ll neither mind
death nor ages

iii.

woman i would rather kiss
the slopes of your breasts
& think of the Himalayas

it would be as if i have reached
the highest ground of Everest
when those proud twin-peaks
trapped between my lips

 iv.

kill me sweetly love
in the dead of night
with your satin dress fallen
before your rose-ankled feet

bury me softly love
bury me O bury me with
all the charms of Eve
on your orient body

v.

i cannot say a word my love
when i see the roses
on your cheeks
& taste the taste of red wine
on your lips

your cheeks
your lips
your breasts

silent little poems
that made these songs
i will sing of them O
i will sing of them sweetly
as if they are the last fruits
flowers from the vanished
orchard of Eden

vi.

i will come to thee love
i will come to thee over thee
yes white as moonlight
sharp as a star

i will take thee love
gently O gently
you will know nothing
nothing O blossom under me
but my brightness above thee
my brightness glistening
mastering thy rosely softness
with white luminous songs

vii.

your breasts are birds
beneath my hands
longing to be free
from their breathlessness
your lips are nameless flowers

groping                searching
for the earth where
it shall find its own
beginning

your eyes are distant stars
lost in its own constellation
& though i hold them close
they are too far
& your body
the skies of flesh
with its own darkness
& harmonious spheres—
it breathes fire & life
as i plunge myself
in rhythmic movements
or fall in measured cadence

man-god & thunder
into your mysterious
universe

viii.

O the dark virgin forest
now lies under me under me

i am rubyed
i am purpled
i am steeled

enclose me now O divinest of all lovers
enclose me now with your softness
like a bird enjailed enjailed
in your satin fingers

you will be pierced with songs O
you will be rivered with silver dew
you will learn how to dance under me

& i will be drowned deathlessly deep
into your own universe where i
first came to be

ix.

you have godded me tonight
enclosed me brightly under
 you who with your allness
brought my adamhood closely
briefly into paradise

so strong
so swift my body
that i did not hear the song
of agony in your eyes

x.

& we loved & loved
& loved again & again O
it was a wondrous night
of crimson rain
& love songs

“Santiago Villafania is a searcher with a seemingly insatiable curiosity and endurance. His quest has brought him to explore world poetry from points East and West. He is no stranger to sophisticated verse forms such the Sapphic strophe nor to the diverse permutations of the Japanese haiku. But he is not a formalist, he has daringly explored Asian and Western cultures in a very personal way and writes his mind with a daring, invigorating, aesthetically pleasing ease. In his poetry Villafania displays not only a breadth, but it feels very much like a breath of fresh air.” – Ute Margaret Saine, poet, critic, translator, past president of PEN Orange County and the former editor of the California Poetry Quarterly

“Villafania’s emergence as a poet is a fine moment to celebrate. Another voice from the regions augurs a richer body of writing that Filipinos can hold up as a mirror of our native culture.” – Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Literature

"The publication of Malagilion: Sonnets tan Villanelles by Santiago B. Villafania should be a source of rejoicing for readers of regional literatures. This second book by Pangasinan's leading poet today is impressive in both form and substance. Villafania has created 300 sonnets and 50 villanelles in his own language that attempt to reflect the primacy of native culture and return the poet to the central stage of social life."A Boost to Pangasinan Literature from Breaking Signs by Cirilo F. Bautista (Philippine Panorama, 16 Dec. 2007, pp.25-26)

"Villafania is not only a visionary poet, he is a linguistic philosopher who codifies the origin of language and culture, dissects the myths and the common beliefs of the people against the urban legends, juxtaposes the literary tradition against the modern influences by dialectically infusing them in his poetic revelation of truth."Poetic Revelation in Language and Culture by Danny C. Sillada (Manila Bulletin, 12 May 2008, pp. F1-F2)

"Santiago Villafania's Balikas ed Caboloan certainly has reinvigorated the anlong tradition of Pangasinan that for a long period of time suffered silence from the hands of writers more attuned to English writing. Characteristically anacbanua, Villafania's poetry echoes his predecessors and presages a promising era for young writers in Pangasinan." – Dr. Marot Nelmida-Flores
